Man sells child, tortures wife for dowry
‘When I denied providing the dowry, he along with seven members of his family tied me to a pole and beat me up until I lost my consciousness,’ said the woman
At least eight people have been accused of brutally torturing a woman in Kharjana village of Sadar upazila, Tangail.
A case was filed on Saturday, accusing Ashraf, and his family members of selling his newborn child for money six months ago and torturing his wife for dowry on Friday, which severely injured her, states the case details.
“Ashraf had sold my newborn child for Tk20,000 and I could not say anything,” said the mother, who is undergoing treatment at the Tangail General Hospital.
“My family provided dowry twice to Ashraf, despite that he was demanding Tk2 lakh more. When I denied providing the dowry, he along with seven members of his family tied me to a pole and beat me up until I lost my consciousness,” said the woman.
“Hearing her screams, locals rushed to the spot and informed me about the heinous act. We rescued the poor woman and took her to a hospital,” said UP chairman Sadek Ali.
“Marital disputes are common in villages like ours, but torturing a poor woman as they did, it is inhuman and they should all be punished,” added the chairman.
“The mother of the victim filed a case with us. We are investigating the incident,” said Tangail Model police station OC Mir Mosarrof Hossain.
“We are making drives to arrest the accused people. We will surely take legal action against them,” added the officer.
