Two sent to jail over rape of minors

A court yesterday sentenced a man to death for raping and murdering a child and then torching her body in Manikganj’s Daulatpur upazila on October 20, 2018.

Judge of Manikganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Md Ali Hossain gave the verdict in presence of accused Shahadat Hossain Sadhu (35), hailing from Shyampur village of the upazila.

According to the case statement, Shahadat was supposed to take his niece, Akhi Akter (13), to her grandmother’s house. He instead took her to an abandoned structure in the village on the night of October 20.

After that, he raped, killed and torched her body so nobody could find out.

The following day, Akhi’s mother filed a case with Daulatpur Police Station, accusing Shahadat. Police later arrested him.

SI Abdul Hai, investigating officer of the case, filed the charge-sheet before the court on May 13, 2019.

After depositions from 15 witnesses, the judge gave the verdict, said special public prosecutor AKM Nurul Huda Rubel.

In a separate hearing, a Dhaka court yesterday sent a man to jail in a case filed for raping a 12-year-old girl in Savar on Tuesday night.

A judge of Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court gave the order after police produced him before the court, said Saiful Islam, inspector (investigation) of Savar Model Police Station.

Victim’s father filed the case with the police station yesterday morning, accusing their neighbour Monir Ahamed (52), said the inspector.

Quoting the case statement, Apurba Dutta, sub-inspector of the police station, said Monir raped the girl at the premises of her house.

Hearing the victim’s cries, family members rescued the victim and caught the accused red handed and informed police.

The victim was sent to the one-stop crisis centre of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for tests, he added.

In another hearing, a Habiganj court yesterday sent a youth to jail in a case filed for raping a 10th-grader in the district’s Madhabpur upazila.

Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Madhabpur Police Station, said the victim’s father filed the case on Tuesday with the police station.

The 15-year-old girl received critical injuries and was first taken to the upazila health complex. Later, she was shifted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital for better treatment.

The victim’s relatives said Rubel Mia (21), who was waiting outside the victim’s house, grabbed her when she went out, forcefully took her near a paddy field and raped her on Monday night.

After being informed of the incident, victim’s father immediately took her to the hospital.

The father said Rubel had been stalking his daughter for a long time, and at one point started to threaten her.

Quoting Habiganj Sadar Hospital’s on-duty doctor, the father said when the girl was brought to the hospital, she was suffering from excessive blood loss, but she is okay now.
