Bangladesh becomes role model in maternal healthcare

Bangladesh has become a role model for success at achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). One of the country’s noteworthy development success has been the significant decrease in Maternal and Child mortality rate, reported on The Daily Star. International and national development partners are working hand in hand with the Government in this sector for further improvement.

According to The Daily Star, The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has been collaborating with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to improve maternal and natal healthcare system. It is expected that, about 500 midwives to graduate from UNFPA’s support programme, so that they can join adolescent health care and family planning organization to contribute to antenatal care and safe delivery.  UNFPA has identified child marriage, gender based violence and sexual reproductive health and rights as target factors for reducing maternal and child mortality rates.

The UNFPA and The Daily Star recently organized a round table at Sylhet on Maternal health, midwifery and eliminating obstetric fistula.
