Tools for Knowledge-Means for Rights: IFMSA Launched Maternal Health & Safe Access to Abortion Toolkit

The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) has launched “Maternal Health & Safe Access to Abortion” or MHASA Toolkit. This comprehensive resource, designed to tackle pressing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) issues, aims to improve maternal health outcomes while addressing gaps in knowledge and access to essential care.

Unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions remain significant contributors to maternal deaths worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Bangladesh. According to the Guttmacher Institute, an estimated 45% of all pregnancies globally are unintended, with nearly half ending in abortion. Unsafe abortions account for up to 13% of maternal deaths, highlighting the urgent need for accessible contraception, safe abortion services, and quality post-abortion care. This toolkit emerges as a beacon of hope, addressing these challenges with evidence-based practices and user-friendly resources.

A Collaborative Effort for Change

The Maternal Health Toolkit is the result of an 11-month collaborative effort led by the IFMSA Small Working Group (SWG) under the Maternal Health and Safe Abortion (MHASA) Program. Initiated by Ms. Basant Ebrahim, the 2023/24 Program Coordinator, this project brought together a dedicated team of SRHR advocates and healthcare professionals. Their mission? To create a centralised hub of credible and practical resources that empower maternal health advocates, medical providers, and community leaders.

“This toolkit represents the culmination of extensive research and teamwork,” said a member of the SWG. “It provides a comprehensive view of maternal health topics, making it easier for advocates to access the information they need.”

Addressing Gaps in Maternal Health Advocacy

One of the key strengths of the toolkit is its focus on filling knowledge gaps in maternal health advocacy. While existing resources on topics like contraception and post-abortion care are abundant, issues such as maternal mental health and access to services in marginalised communities often lack adequate attention. This toolkit bridges those gaps by offering:

  • Educational Materials: Easy-to-understand guides on maternal health and safe abortion practices.
  • Evidence-Based Practices: Data-driven strategies to improve maternal health outcomes.
  • Practical Tools: Resources for caregivers, healthcare providers, and community leaders to implement effective maternal health interventions.

Impact on SRHR in Bangladesh

For countries like Bangladesh, where maternal mortality remains a critical issue, this toolkit can be a game-changer. According to UNICEF, Bangladesh’s maternal mortality ratio stands at 173 deaths per 100,000 live births. Limited access to safe abortion services and cultural stigmas further exacerbate the situation. By equipping advocates and providers with this toolkit, IFMSA takes a significant step toward reducing maternal deaths and ensuring reproductive rights.

Looking Ahead

The launch of the Maternal Health & Safe Access to Abortion Toolkit underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling SRHR challenges. It not only empowers individuals to advocate for change but also fosters a culture of informed and compassionate care.
