Intimate Partner Violence and Child Marriage
In Bangladesh, domestic violence is a rampant public health and human rights problem. Experts have held the patriarchal society as the root cause of this problem, along with a lack of women’s voice and stake in the decision making process. For a girl to be married in an early age, all of the aforementioned is true and more. As a result, number of domestic violence cases occur more in case of child marriage.
Although women’s share of economically important work is increasing, women are still economically and socially dependent on men.
In this paper, the authors look at this problem through the lens of different social theories and use statistical analysis to certain whether marriage at an early age is associated significantly with risk of IPV and to what extent.
At the end, the authors have urged to combine IPV and child marriage efforts as they may complement each other.
