World Scenario of Sexual Violence
One of the common and serious public health problem is sexual violence. The occurrence of sexual violence is common in all over the world. Sexual violence is mainly driven by economic, social and cultural issues. The core reason behind sexual violence is gender inequality. Unfortunately, worldwide, one in every four women are victims of sexual violence. It has a severe impact on physical and mental health of women. Also there is risk of sexual and reproductive health problems of these women which might have long term health hazard.
Data regarding sexual violence are deficient. There is a great need of research on sexual violence. Together, the society need to work in order to prevent sexual violence, target both women and men, support the victims of sexual assault etc. We need strategies for changing social norms and raising the status of women. Health professionals have a large role to play in supporting the victims of sexual assault. This support can be medical and psychological. In order to end sexual violence, it is essential to have a strong commitment and involvement of governments and civil society, along with a coordinated response across a range of sectors.
