Contraception and the importance of Sexuality Education
Every year on 26th September, World Contraception Day (WCD) is marked around the world. The day is marked to raise awareness among men and women about the birth control method available both for men and women such as pills, condoms, tubal ligation, contraceptive patches and rings, implants and IUDS, etc. safe and healthy family planning. The observation of the day was commenced by ten international family planning organizations and later on it has been recognized and supported by a coalition of 15 international NGOs, governmental organizations, and scientific and medical societies with an interest in spreading the right knowledge about sexual and reproductive health. The knowledge and implementation of the contraceptive methods helps in family planning for couples or spouses regarding when to have children, the number of children a couple should have and the time period in between two babies when taking a child. What is more important in using the contraceptive method is the Sexual and Reproductive Health Right (SRHR) of men and women both.
Unfortunately, in Bangladesh, the access to sex education is very limited. Therefore the contraceptive methods are less introduced to adolescents and the youth here. So, the adolescents grow up to be youth and eventually turn to make families as spouses without having much knowledge of the contraceptive methods, sexual and reproductive health rights which results in unplanned family and improper upbringing of the children. The ignorance of the contraceptive methods also causes health related problems for the couples and children as well. The couples suffer from sexual, mental and physical complications and the children too suffer as not growing up or developed as they should be. Therefore, the sex education and the use of the contraceptive method should be introduced to youth in the institutions to prevent the future negative outcomes and, to build a healthy society and family to live in. The education on this issue should not be a matter of shame or shyness both for the educators and learners as it is related to issues of life.
The importance of using contraceptive methods is also very essential in today’s world of population explosion particularly in Bangladesh as the rate of childbirth is very high against the limited geography of Bangladesh which is not proportionate at all. Therefore to help in developing the ideal society and family, the proper use of the contraceptive methods by couples or spouses has no alternative.
