The plight of women following a disaster
Most of the times, people in flood prone areas live under the poverty line and among them, women are disproportionately affected due to lack of proper health services, a study conducted by Professor Dr Mahbuba Nasreen.
The flood of 1991, 140,000 reported dead in the country and 90% were women, study done by Dhaka Tribune. This study shows that, women from flood affected area suffered from menstruation problems, urinary infection, leucorrhoea, waist pain, pregnancy related complications, and malnutrition during disasters. These women suffered immensely, especially to their sexual and reproductive health because of poor living conditions and institutional responses during floods.
Based on the findings of their study, mobile health care services to serve the sexual and reproductive health care needs of women living in these areas following a disaster.
