Situation Analysis of Obstetric Fistula in Bangladesh
Every year a large number of women in our country are experiencing life threatening, high risk, chronic or other serious health problems due to pregnancy and childbirth. Obstetric fistula is one of the most devastating morbidity of pregnancy. Poor and young women are mostly affected and there is an immense lack of information on access to surgical repair. The demand of reconstruction surgery is far greater than the capacity of existing facilities specifically in terms of skilled manpower.
In Western countries, the obstetric fistula are nowadays rarely seen as a maternal morbidity rather as a complication of pelvic surgery or radiotherapy. Fistula is a preventable condition and for this reason many developed and developing countries have been successful in fighting against fistula even in low resource setting situations.
