A Silent Health and Human Rights Issue: Child Marriage
Child marriage, not only violates human rights but also have open effect on girls’ education, health, psychological well-being, and the health of their offspring. It also raises the risk for depression, sexually transmitted infection, cervical cancer, malaria, obstetric fistulas, and maternal mortality. Child marriage leads to premature birth which results in offspring risk and neonatal or infant death. Poverty is the main driving force of child marriage. It is done in order to safeguard a girls’ financial futures and social ties. Making sure that the girls are staying in school, is one of the most proficient approaches to decrease child marriage. It will also solve the health problems of those girls before even occurring.
This paper tries to figure out the reasons and consequences of the child marriage. Poverty and child marriage have a positive correlation. Child marriage decreased in the countries where poverty rate decreased. This paper shows that media attention increases awareness regarding the matter and can bring rapid revolution.
