Research study: Sexual and Reproductive Health during Emergencies- Situation Analysis of Disaster Prone Areas of Bangladesh
The Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies, University of Dhaka has carried out the Rapid Assessment on the Situation of Sexual and Reproductive Health during Emergencies in collaboration with Family Planning Association of Bangladesh (FPAB) under SPRINT project funded by IPPF-SARO. The study report is titled “Sexual and Reproductive Health during Emergencies: Situation Analysis of Disaster Prone Areas of Bangladesh.”
The overall objective of the assessment is to provide a rapid overview of the emergency response by identifying the priority sexual and reproductive health needs of the vulnerable population and the capacity and gaps of the existing response system in the country. The study has also explored the role and coordination mechanism between the key stakeholders in the SRH service delivery mechanism during the humanitarian crisis in the country and to identify the mechanisms in placeto prevent SGBV during an emergency and make recommendations of further strategies to prevent it. Additionally, this study has also emphasized on identifying the measures that are currently in place to prevent maternal and neonatal mortality during and post-emergency period.
The study has been designed following a mixed-method approach to assess the overall situation of sexual and reproductive health needs of the vulnerable populations and to evaluate the capacity and gaps of the existing response system in the disaster-affected communities of Bangladesh. The study has been carried out in two coastal districts of Khulna and Noakhali and in one northern district of Dinajpur in Bangladesh. First, at least one Upazila from each district was selected and then two villages were selected from each selected Upazila in the three districts as part of the study area.
