Driving Scooters and Raising Awareness
“We believe that if we want to do something for the society we must go out of our home,” Dr Sakia.
Four young girls are travelling on scooters throughout the country to raise awareness on women’s empowerment, break taboos and look for history and heritage. They have already travelled 49 districts and plans to visit all 69 districts of the country. The girls are- Dr Manashi Shaha and Dr Sakia Haque from Dhaka Medical College and Silvi Rahman and Shamsun Nahar from Dhaka University. They are members of a female tourist organisation called ‘Travelettes of Bangladesh.
Dr Manashi reported, “We started our journey in the final stage of our academic carrier in 2017 and already visited 49 districts in seven phases, between intervals of study, and we are hopeful to finish our tour within April this year, before starting our service or family life.”
Their journey is not just about travelling and sightseeing, but it also includes meeting with the masses to spread awareness and disseminate knowledge. Recently, the girls reached Provati Primary School in Pabna where they talked to students on menstrual hygiene management. “We are trying to educate them about their adolescent age problem and inspiring them to break the taboo and make them eligible for the society,” said Dr Sakia.
