Defying Discrimination: Sanjeevani Sudha’s Journey to M.Phil in DU
In a society where discrimination and adversity often shackle the dreams and aspirations of individuals who defy societal norms, one person has emerged as a beacon of hope and resilience. Sanjeevani Sudha, a transgender woman, is on the brink of making history as the first transgender woman to pursue an MPhil at Dhaka University, the country’s esteemed academic institution.
Sanjeevani’s journey has been fraught with hardships from the very beginning. She vividly recalls the heart-wrenching day when she was segregated and made to sit alone in the first-class room, forbidden from interacting with her classmates simply because she was transgender. Those words still resonate in her mind, etching a deep sadness within her. Yet, it is precisely this adversity that has fueled her determination and unwavering spirit, propelling her to achieve greatness against all odds.
Undeterred by trivialities, insults, and countless obstacles, Sanjeevani successfully completed her education, from school to college and university. Recently, she applied for MPhil admission at Dhaka University, meeting all the prerequisites for acceptance into the program. As her admission awaits finalization, Sanjeevani stands at the forefront of an unprecedented milestone, ready to embark on her academic journey as a trailblazer for her community and the entire nation.
Expressing her sentiments, Sanjeevani said, “Today, by qualifying for the MPhil program at Dhaka University, I continue to fight against the challenging and adverse circumstances. It is not just my personal pride but the pride of my community and the entire country. A door is opening for me to pursue higher education, and I firmly believe that education should transcend caste and gender barriers.”
Born and raised in Dhanbari, Tangail, Sanjeevani hails from a loving family that has been a constant source of support. Since childhood, she has endured the negative behavior of society, but her family, particularly her mother, has been her rock. With determination and an excellent academic track record, Sanjeevani secured admission to Chittagong University, where she faced further discrimination due to her gender identity. Yet, her resolve remained unyielding, resulting in outstanding achievements in both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
Alongside her academic pursuits, Sanjeevani harbored a deep passion for dance, which she nurtured from an early age. With formal training in classical dance, she began working as a dance teacher at Lama Chinnamool Children’s School in Bandarban, contributing to the development of young minds. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, she selflessly volunteered to assist in funeral services for those who succumbed to the virus, burying or cremating over 1,200 bodies in a year’s time.
Speaking about her professional journey, Sanjeevani remarked, “I strongly felt that my gender should never hinder my progress. I resolved to utilize my talents, hard work, and potential.” Consequently, after the pandemic subsided, she persisted in applying for jobs, eventually securing a position as a Communication and CSR Officer at a private bank’s head office in October 2021.
For Sanjeevani, pursuing a higher degree has long been a cherished dream, fueled by a desire to respond to the neglect she experienced and reach the pinnacle of education. Since 2019, she has been preparing herself to undertake an MPhil, and with the guidance of Professor Zobaida Nasreen from the Department of Anthropology at Dhaka University, she developed her research proposal on reframing gender in the politics of Bangladesh. Set to commence her MPhil program in the academic year 2023-24, Sanjeevani’s dedication and commitment to her studies are set to break new ground.
Expressing her delight, Professor Zobaida Nasreen shared, “I am thrilled to supervise Sanjeevani’s MPhil journey. It is a historic moment for our country, as she is the first transgender woman to fulfill all the criteria for admission to this specialized higher degree at Dhaka University. Her admission is currently under consideration, and I believe this achievement is not only personal but also a triumph for her community. Dhaka University has opened a door, paving the way for a more inclusive society.”
The Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Akhtaruzzaman, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Sanjeevani’s struggle, bravery, and unwavering dedication to higher education have deeply impressed me. It is our responsibility to help individuals like her overcome obstacles. Building an inclusive society lies at the core of Dhaka University’s values. Sanjeevani’s forthcoming MPhil journey signifies a significant event and a transformative step forward for both her and society.”
Looking ahead, Sanjeevani aspires to pursue a Ph.D. and post-doctorate, with a firm determination to dismantle the closed doors of societal prejudice for her community. She seeks to convey a powerful message, urging society to judge individuals based on their abilities, rather than their gender, and to afford them the respect they deserve.
As Sanjeevani Sudha prepares to embark on this groundbreaking journey, she embodies hope, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of those who dare to challenge societal norms. Her pursuit of knowledge, against all odds, stands as a testament to the human potential that flourishes when barriers are dismantled and inclusivity reigns supreme. May her courage inspire generations to come, fostering a more accepting and equitable world for all.
