On the occasion of International Human Rights Day 2023, Bangladesh proudly reaffirms its unwavering dedication to upholding human rights values, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards a more just and equitable society. The theme for this year, ‘Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All,’ resonates powerfully with Bangladesh’s remarkable progress in promoting and safeguarding human rights.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in separate messages, expressed their commitment to the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), emphasizing the importance of dignity, freedom, and justice for all citizens. Both leaders highlighted the integral role played by Bangladesh’s founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in championing human rights and incorporating them into the country’s constitution.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina underscored Bangladesh’s prioritization of human rights on its developmental trajectory. The government has embraced a holistic approach, ensuring that no one is left behind in the nation’s progress. Through relentless efforts, Bangladesh has established the rule of law, guaranteed fundamental human rights and freedoms, and promoted equality, justice, and socio-economic rights for all citizens.
Internationally, Bangladesh has been actively engaged in resolving conflicts, fostering peace, and championing human rights on the global stage. As a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Bangladesh has significantly contributed to the protection and promotion of human rights worldwide.
President Shahabuddin, in his address, urged the international community to seek permanent solutions to conflicts and stand in solidarity with the underprivileged and oppressed. He expressed profound concern over the indiscriminate killings and destruction in Palestine and the Russia-Ukraine war, condemning the attacks by the Israeli occupation forces.
Bangladesh’s success in various socio-economic indicators, including improvements in quality of life, poverty reduction, healthcare and education expansion, and empowerment of women, reflects its commitment to enhancing human rights. The nation’s role during the COVID-19 pandemic and its exemplary humanitarian efforts, including providing shelter to Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, further demonstrate Bangladesh’s global leadership in protecting human rights.
Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, and NHRC’s Full-time Member Md Selim Reza echoed the government’s commitment during the International Human Rights Day celebration.
