Alabama Criminalises Abortion
Alabama has placed a strict law against abortion which will take effect in the next six months. The law bans nearly all abortions in the state, including the cases of incest or rape. The bill will allow abortion only when the ‘mother’s’ health is in danger. In her statement, Governor Kay Ivey wrote, ‘This legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God.’ Earlier this year, the legislation to restrict abortion rights was introduced in 16 states in the USA, four of whose governors signed the bills banning abortion if an embryonic heartbeat is detected.
The decision faced immediate backlash when supporters of abortion condemned the bill, stating that it takes away the right from women to control their own bodies. Those performing abortions would be committing a felony, punishable by up to 99 years in prison. In response, Lady Gaga tweeted, “So there’s a higher penalty for doctors who perform these operations than for most rapists?”
“It’s an extreme law, and they want to challenge Roe versus Wade. But my humble view is that this is not the case we want to bring to the Supreme Court because I think this one will lose,” Christian television broadcaster Pat said on his program, “The 700 Club.”
