Barisal: Court sentences rapist to maximum punishment
A man in Barisal convicted of rape was sentenced in absentia to life-term imprisonment with an additional fine of Tk 50,000. Failure to pay the fine will lead to three more years in prison.
Judge Sheikh Abu Taher of the district’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Feb 2 after examining records and seven witnesses.
According to UNB reports, a man named Bazlur Rahman of the district’s Ichhagura area developed an affair with the victim who was underage at the time. He forced consent over the victim with false promises of marriage, and raped her repeatedly.
When the girl got pregnant, Bazlur plotted to abort the fetus by tricking the victim into a hospital.
However, the victim, 19 years of age at the time, fled the scene and later gave birth to a baby girl. A case was filed afterwards with Kotwali Police Station, where the lawmen submitted a chargesheet against the offender on April 3, 2011.
The court also ordered the government to bear the expenses of the rape victim’s child until it turns 21 years.
