Roundtable Discussion: Female RMG workers should receive SRH facilities

Administrative sexual and reproductive health (SRH) facilities must be ensured for female ready-made garments (RMG) workers, and if they are provided, the production will also increase, said speakers at a roundtable discussion on Jan 17.

The meeting was organized by the Bangla daily Prothom Alo in association with SNV Netherlands Development Organization at the newspaper’s office in the capital.

The speakers discussed several issues ranging from implementing more training and workshop on SRH issues to creating awareness among the garment workers.

They also asserted that adding a section on working women’s sexual and reproductive health within the existing labour law would make sure employers follow them. Even though some large to medium-scale garment factories implement SRH facilities for their female workers, many small factories do not.

Out of 3,700 Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) factories, 2,200 have been inspected by the government and BGMEA till date. According to BGMEA president, they maintained “all required facilities” for their workers.
