US state Kansas preserves abortion rights in first post-Roe vs Wade vote
The voters of the US state of Kansas rejected the constitutional amendment of Roe v Wade on August 2. The Midwestern US state of Kansas chose to keep abortion rights, resulting in a major win for abortion rights advocates. This is the first major poll on this explosive topic since the Supreme Court invalidated nationwide abortion access in June.
Republican-dominated legislatures are rushing to enact tight limits on abortion in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Therefore, this vote has become as a massive victory for abortion rights worldwide. According to Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab, turnout for this referendum was as high as 50% when the polls closed. This is more than the typical turnout for a general election.
By midday, 250 voters had cast their vote at the polling place in the Kansas City suburb of Olathe. This is about the same number that would show up throughout the day if it were a presidential election. California, Kentucky and other states are set to vote on this burning issue in November as well.
President Joe Biden also praised the verdict on Twitter. He said, “Tonight, Kansans used their voices to protect women’s right to choose and access reproductive health care. It’s an important victory for Kansas, but also for every American who believes that women should be able to make their own health decisions without government interference.”
