Rise of youth
Bangladesh counts 47 million young people; three times the population of Dhaka. In a report about adolescents all over the world, UNFPA states that Bangladesh should invest in its young people. One of the challenges mentioned is the high mortality risk for mothers. Their risk of death caused by childbirth is twice as high as normal for up to two years after childbirth; for adolescent mothers the risk is even higher.
The United Nations Population Fund urges the government to take care of its youth for the sake of developing the country. “If they are equipped with necessary skills, good health and effective choices, they present an enormous opportunity to transform the future”, said Argentina Matavel, UNFPA Bangladesh representative, according to a report in The Daily Star.
