Navigating Dhaka Fearlessly: Women’s Shuttle Paving the Way for Safer Commutes

In Dhaka, women often face anxiety and safety concerns while commuting. A 2022 survey found that nearly 94% of women in Bangladesh have experienced harassment on public transport. In response, Tasnia Atique, a women’s rights advocate, is launching “Women’s Shuttle,” a transportation service exclusively designed for women. This initiative addresses safety gaps in the city’s public transport and ride-sharing services, providing a much-needed solution for women.

Tasnia’s experience as a university student navigating the chaotic streets of Dhaka fueled her determination to create a service that prioritises women’s safety. “It wasn’t just about reaching my destination; it was about feeling safe throughout the entire journey,” she recalled. Women’s Shuttle aims to offer not just convenience but a sense of empowerment for female commuters.

The service plans to operate minibus-like vehicles along routes commonly used by women, with the first route connecting Mirpur 12 and Bashundhara. Each vehicle will have a female assistant onboard, ensuring no one is left feeling unsafe. Women’s Shuttle is also introducing a fixed daily rate system through a 20-day subscription model, setting it apart from other ride-sharing services that charge fluctuating rates based on traffic.

Beyond providing safe transport, Women’s Shuttle focuses on empowering women in every sense. The initiative is creating job opportunities for both men and women, with drivers receiving extensive training that goes beyond just driving skills. Tasnia hopes this model will encourage more women to step into the workforce and inspire others to challenge societal norms.

Women’s Shuttle is also part of a larger movement toward improving women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) by enabling greater mobility and independence. Safe transport is essential for accessing education, healthcare, and employment—fundamental components of SRHR. This initiative helps break down barriers that have long hindered women from fully participating in public life.

As Women’s Shuttle prepares to officially launch, Tasnia has big plans for expansion. She envisions adding more routes and increasing the fleet size, making Dhaka a safer place for women to move freely. This service is not just about getting from point A to B; it is about giving women control over their journey, literally and figuratively.

By addressing transport safety, Women’s Shuttle plays a critical role in empowering women, fostering independence, and promoting SRHR in Bangladesh.
