Marital violence responsible for increase in divorces
In his recent piece Parvez Babul sheds light on how violence against women in marriage is related to increasing rates of divorce. Babul has talked to women from diverse backgrounds and has found out that they have a lot in common. Some of the causes behind increased rate of divorce, as Babul has identified are dominating attitude, extra marital affairs, drug addiction, dowry and violence inflicted on women by husbands and the in laws. He also opines that women who get married early and have less education or income are more vulnerable to divorce. However, education, employment and awareness of rights have led to post-divorce freedom and the writer finds it a positive sign of empowerment of these women.
