International Rural Women Day: Importance of SRHR

Human rights activists and civil society network members observed the International Rural Women’s Day on 15th October this year. Speakers at a press conference urged the government and private organizations concerned to take necessary measures in ensuring rights to safe reproductive health, education, and physical change.

A human chain titled “Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) of the adolescents: Our Commitment” was also moderated by coordinators of the National Committee in front of National Press Club. The organizer said that committee and members in 64 districts are observing the day through rallies, seminars and public dramas to demonstrate awareness for the rural women and adolescents about the aforementioned issues.

Further emphasis was given to learning about sexually transmitted diseases (or STDs), premature pregnancy and complicacy, safe delivery and other issues related with motherhood.

According to the World Health Organization, people of age between 10-19 are considered as adolescents which fills up about one fourth of total population in Bangladesh. The school textbooks contain some lessons on puberty, but these are not enough to learn for the adolescent girls.

The national committee Chairperson Shamima Akhter, its secretariat Coordinator Ferdous Ara Rumee, members Tamanna Rahman, and Asif Iqbal, were, among others, present at the news conference.
