Three sentenced to death for gang rape

Garment worker Asma was gang raped 10 years ago, a court in Narayanganj yesterday sentenced three people to death related to the crime.

The criminals were fined 1 lakh each, the amount to be passed on to the victim’s family.

Judge Md Jewel Rana of Narayanganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal pronounced the verdict. The convicts Nasir Uddin Bitol, 40, Safun, 34, and Khokan Miah, 32 were present in the court and four others related to the crime were set free.

The victim Asma Akhter was abducted from Sarbat Bari in Kushiara Bhadrasan of Bandar upazila while she was returning from work on March 12, 2008.

Her body was recovered from bush two days later.

Asma’s father filed a case soon after the incident.

The victim’s elder brother Mohammad Masud said, during the case proceedings they were given threats a lot of times and now that four of the alleged criminals   are set free they are in a state of insecurity and would appeal to the High Court again.
