‘Remarkable success in advancing women’ of Bangladesh

Bangladesh has achieved a remarkable success in advancing women and is now regarded as a role model in the world in promoting women, according to State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki.

The Minister said this while making the country statement at the ongoing 61st session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at United Nations (UN) Headquarters.

Chumki, who is leading the Bangladesh delegation to the session, mentioned that the journey to promote empowerment of women began since Bangladesh’s independence as policies and institutional measures had been taken for the development of women under Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s leadership.

During the last three years, some 1, 69,711 women were employed in foreign countries and they sent a large amount of remittances back home, said Chumki.

She reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to the full, effective and accelerated implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“We believe the success of achieving MDGs with regard to gender parity will help us implement SDG-5, Gender Equality, in Bangladesh before 2030,” Chumki further said.
