Unplanned Pregnancy: Abortion verses Menstrual Regulation
In Bangladesh, one of the alarming health issues for girls and women is unsafe abortion which directly effects maternal mortality too. In order to come out of this health hazard, other countries legalize abortion or prevent unwanted pregnancy but Bangladesh introduced menstrual regulation (MR). It is the most decentralized system of pregnancy termination.
The data highlight in this paper, the levels of MR and abortion measured using both abortion ratios and abortion rates, appear to be increasing in some areas of Bangladesh. This means that both the number of abortions/ MRs and the probability that a pregnancy will end in an abortion MR are increasing. While use of abortion and MR appears to be increasing, at least in some areas of Bangladesh, mortality from abortion has fallen. At the same time, abortion remains an important cause of maternal mortality. These results indicates that although the MR have had a positive effect on abortion related mortality, unsafe abortions still arise.
