A Stethoscope and a Vision: A Worthy Recognition for Dr. Halida Akhter
In a momentous ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina conferred the prestigious Begum Rokeya Padak 2023 upon five remarkable women for their outstanding contributions to society, women’s education, and empowerment. Among them, the distinguished Dr. Halida Hanum Akhter from Rangpur was recognized for her pioneering efforts in establishment of women’s rights in Bangladesh.
The other four recipients of the award are Khaleda Ekram (posthumous), Kamrunnesa Ashraf Dina (posthumous), Ranita Bala, and Nishat Majumder.
Khaleda Ekram, the first female vice-chancellor of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, was honoured for her role in women’s education, while Kamrunnesa Ashraf Dina from Netrokona district was recognised for her contribution to women’s socio-economic development; Nishat Majumdar from Lakshmipur for women’s empowerment, and Ranita Bala from Thakurgaon for rural development.
