This year, UNFPA is focusing on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sexual and reproductive health and how that translates into an escalation in unintended pregnancies in some countries to a decline in fertility in others.

Demographic shifts have often been seen as a cause for concern by governments and other stakeholders, and the current situation is no different.

But UNFPA’s message remains consistent and clear. To address dynamic demographics, we must put sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights (SRHR) at the centre of population strategies and policies.

This includes voluntary and rights-based family planning, and socioeconomic safety nets that allow women and couples the ability to balance life and work.

Ultimately, these issues must be viewed through the lens of the landmark ICPD Programme of Action crafted by 179 governments in 1994 – with its vision of rights and choices for all, grounded in gender equality and human rights.

UNFPA’s hour-long programme includes a closer look at three very different country contexts – the Philippines, Nepal and Thailand – with compelling stories and speakers from each, including:

Moderator: Dr Leila Joudane, UNFPA Representative in the Philippines
